VIGILIS Hard to know how deep this cuts until you visit Boulder Creek and Ben Lomond to see what was lost. Big Basin is a healing place and I'm thankful to have lived in it... Favorite track: Take One Good Look.

He rode into town with a smile and a promise Of snake oil and crops of prosperity. Riding high on his high horse, and low in our eyes, The charlatan deceives with sincerity. Then he sits at the table, an ace up his sleeve, And everyone there still saw it. An ace nonetheless, the man reeks confidence 'Cause he knows he won't have to draw it. And he says "I'll bet you this dollar that I can be king!" No way, there's no way! And he says "I'll bet you this dollar that I can be king!" No way, there's no way! We watch with awe at this crumbling façade, We can't wait to rebuild where it stood! A charlatan maybe, but a bet we can fix For good, for good! Everything shiny, like glitter and gold, And you thought that you had us at "hello." Well I followed your lead and my crops never grew; My fields have fallen to fallow. I made some mistakes and he held them against me, But I knew as much about him! Nobody believes me, except cruel speculation; Don't stay silent, my future uncertain! And he says "I'll bet you this dollar that I can be king!" No way, there's no way! And he says "I'll bet you this dollar that I can be king!" No way, there's no way! This story might sound a little familiar: The people, they feared they'd been fleeced. By the charlatan they thought was perfectly harmless Released, released, released! Singing, "La, la la la, la la la, la la la" "La, la la la, la la la!" "La, la la la, la la la, la la la, la la" "La, na na na na, da da da..." "Da" "Daa" "Daaaaa"

Their Last 02:38
He sat there alone, waiting watching, thought his face looked too severe. When she approached him he felt his heart in his throat. But she couldn't take her eyes off him, she nearly fell in the street. Her laces bound and her mouth all filled with cotton. She took his pain away. She took his pain away. Standing high upon the branches of the Joshua tree, She calls to him.   When he tried to hug her that very first time with cautious optimism They both had hoped that the other one felt the same Then the first time that their bodies touched, he enveloped her in his arms It was strange at first, so he asked to try again. He can be strong again. He can be strong again. Climbing up among the thorny knife-like leaves, They block the sun. Now he couldn't keep his hands off her, he could tell she felt the same She made him feel safe, he made her open up to him. When they fell asleep, to dream of love, to wake together once again. He always wondered which time would be their last.

Bought some tickets for the new stage show. You and I, we couldn't wait to go. Got a table for a dinner downtown - it was your favorite. Got all gussied up, rode the train, it felt brave... It was just a dream! We were kings and queens! So will you sing with me? Now we can't have nice things. Wrote a new song to share with all of you. Tried it out and thought, yeah, this'll do. Booked a gig at a local watering hole - it was my favorite. Saw your eyes light up, caught my breath, I have to savor It was just a dream! We were kings and queens! So will you sing with me? Now we can't have nice things. No we can't have nice things. I don't even know who to blame That we can't have nice things. Will it ever be the same? We can't have nice things. We can't have nice things. We can't have nice things. We can't have nice things. Will it ever be the same? We can't have nice things. I held your hand, the time will come - you were my favorite. Saw your eyes light up, caught my breath, I have to savor it.

So now I'm grown and I grieve, waiting for my reprieve From the sight you forced me to see. With a swipe of your knife, sure, you ended his life, But did you know what it did to me? What it did to me? Irrational damage; your unhinged rampage, As a cub I hid in a tree. You didn't know this vicious cycle, and I swear on the bible It's my father's fault to some degree. To a degree. And I hunt... and I stalk... and I wait... and I watch. And I kill. And now I've had just a taste, letting none go to waste. There's no way to turn back now. I'll hunt you and your friends and I'll get my revenge. This is my solemn vow.  My solemn vow.   And I hunt... and I stalk... and I wait... and I watch. And I hunt... and I stalk... and I wait... and I watch. (And I hunt and I stalk and I wait and I watch) And I kill.         (Standing over your grave) And I kill.         (It's your blood that I crave) And I kill.         (No one comin' to your aid) And I kill.         (I'm the monster that you made) I'm the monster that you made.         (I'm the monster that you made) I'm the monster that you made.         (I'm the monster that you made) I'm the monster that you made.

So look in my eyes and render me defenseless. Leave everything behind to suffer consequences. So face me now, look at me, Close your eyes and disappear. Take one good look before it's gone, One good look before it's gone. Take one good look before it's gone. And it won't be long. Do you ever wonder if we come back again? Once the Earth is salted in our exhibition of sin. So face me now, look at me, Close your eyes and disappear. Take one good look before it's gone, One good look before it's gone. Take one good look before it's gone. And it won't be long. Whoa, I forget what you look like. Whoa, I forget what you feel like. Whoa, So wonderful in my mind's eye. Whoa, I forget everything. I forget everything. I forget everything. Everything.

I'm a one trick pony in this two bit town. Everywhere I go seems like three's a crowd. And I just want you in my life when the world comes crashing down. Dream of me and I'll dream of you. In our dreams is when I feel true. Oh the poetry that will flow from me when the world comes crashing down. I think we will make it through. I know you will. You were always stronger than me. Well the next town on, it's all the same. I'm more at home, home on the range. But in between leave me to be unseen, when the world came crashing down. When the world came crashing down. When the world came crashing down. I think we will make it through. I know you will. You were always stronger than me. I lied alone till you came to me. You held me tight and you washed me clean. I just want you in my life as the world comes crashing down. When the world came crashing down. Yeah the world came crashing down. When the world came crashing down. I think we will make it through. I know you will. You were always stronger than me. I think we will make it through. I know you will. You were always stronger than me.

She went running She went running toward a destination She chose herself Not knowing she’d been running all this time within someone else’s world And all the roads led back to him His words whispered in the wind And the words became reality Spread her desert Filled the sea You’ll never amount to anything She was running Through mountains, unnoticed topography Still containing laughter lines of a time less labyrinthine - the beginning And all the roads led back to him His words whispered in the wind And the words became reality Spread the desert Filled her sea You’ll never amount to anything But the blue, the beautiful deep blue sky Refused to hold his lies She could move the curtain, the suffocation Realized she could fly all this time Toward morning Toward morning Then all the roads washed away from him His words drifted in the wind And her world became reality Through the tempest, she could see Through the tempest, she could see Through the tempest, she could see She could do anything She could do anything

On a cliff facing west, he held me by the neck, Yelling with thunder, yelling of death. I asked if he was done, oh, letting the clouds rumble along. And thus began our descent into the eye of the storm. Years have gone by, But the mines of our mind Haven’t let go Of the dangers we tread. What a life to live, What survival did, To get us all the way here! Sliding down walls of iridescent scree, We found a copper pond balanced between two peaks. We laughed at our place, among nature's untamed curls, Not knowing what lay beneath, not knowing if we’d make it home. Years have gone by, But the mines of our mind Haven’t let go Of the dangers we tread. What a life to live, What survival did, To get us all the way here! Years have gone by, But the mines of our mind Haven’t let go Of the dangers we tread. What a life to live, What survival did, To get us all the way here!

I cut my bangs with some rusty kitchen scissors. I screamed his name til the neighbors called the cops. I numbed the pain at the expense of my liver. Don't know what I did next, I just know I couldn't stop. Word got around to the barflies and the baptists. My Mama's phone started ringin' off the hook. I can hear her now sayin' she ain't gonna have it, Don't matter how you feel, it only matters how you look. Go and fix your make up, girl, it's just a break up. Run and hide your crazy and start actin' like a lady 'Cause I raised you better, gotta keep it together Even when you fall apart, This ain't my Mama's broken heart. Wish I could be just a little less dramatic Like a Kennedy when Camelot went down in flames. Leave it to me to be holdin' all the matches When the fire trucks show up and there's nobody else to blame. Can't get revenge and keep a spotless reputation. Sometimes revenge is just a choice you gotta make. My Mama came from a softer generation Where you get a grip and bite your lip just to save a little face. Go and fix your make up, girl, it's just a break up. Run and hide your crazy and start actin' like a lady 'Cause I raised you better, gotta keep it together Even when you fall apart, This ain't my Mama's broken heart. Powder your nose, paint your toes, Line your lips and keep 'em closed. Cross your legs, dot your eyes, And never let 'em see you cry. Go and fix your make up, girl, it's just a break up. Run and hide your crazy and start actin' like a lady 'Cause I raised you better, gotta keep it together Even when you fall apart, This ain't my Mama's broken heart. Go and fix your make up, girl, it's just a break up. Run and hide your crazy and start actin' like a lady 'Cause I raised you better, gotta keep it together Even when you fall apart, This ain't my Mama's broken heart.

You said life was for living, so let the dead be. Let life be like music and we’d all be free. I’d dance alone, nothing fancy: Just the rhythm of two stepping boots. I’d dance alone, nothing fancy: Just the rhythm of two stepping boots. I wasn’t looking in any direction Until your laughter laid down like a cloth. It cleared the air of so much evil. Made the room warm and soft to the touch. I’d dance alone, nothing fancy: Just the rhythm of two stepping boots. I’ll take your hand, nothing fancy: Just the rhythm of two stepping boots. Let life be like music, so let the dead be. Life is for living. You said we were free. Let life be like music, so let the dead be. Life is for living. You said we were free. Let life be like music, so let the dead be. (You said we were free, we were free) Life is for living. You said we were free. (We were free, la-de-da) Let life be like music, so let the dead be. Life is for living. You said we were free. Let life be like music, so let the dead be. Life is for living. You said we were free.

about

Sawdust & Fairytales is the second full-length album by California-based folk rock band The Treacherous French. The album represents a culmination of four years of songwriting since the release of their first album, Snapshots. These past four years have been turbulent for the band, having experienced a divorce, loss of a house due to a wildfire, and of course, a worldwide pandemic, all against the backdrop of some wild political shenanigans. Now, you may think that an album born from these experiences would be filled with heartbreak and sadness, and there are elements of that, but there are also elements of love and hope woven throughout. With songs that will both break your heart and make you want to dance, Sawdust & Fairytales reminds us that even in the darkest of days, life and love always find a way to shine through.

The nine new originals and one cover song on Sawdust & Fairytales were developed on and off between 2018 and 2022 while the band continued playing shows locally, right up until we all had to go inside in March 2020. After coming out of hiding towards the end of 2021, they enlisted the help of fellow musician, friend, and collaborator, Jason Gonzales (Sycamore Willow), to produce and engineer the project. They rented a farmhouse in the Sierra Nevada foothills, in the heart of California’s gold country, and converted a rec room into a makeshift recording studio. In their new home away from home, they braved 100+ degree heat, a thunderstorm, shoddy air conditioning, and wildlife, and came home from the long weekend with ten songs ready for mixing and final production.
